A full house of friends, family, professional associates, and community members packed the Weston Historical Museum on Tuesday, July 7, to honor Jim and Beth McPherson for 42 years of chronicling life in Weston as publishers of The Weston Chronicle.

Since 1984, the McPhersons faithfully recorded the first draft of Weston’s history each week in the pages of the community newspaper. Like the publishers before them, Jim and Beth provided an invaluable service, preserving the stories, milestones, and everyday moments that define the town and create a historical record for generations to come.

The celebration also marked the transfer of The Weston Chronicle to its new owner, Megan Jantos. Among the well-wishers who turned out for the occasion were Ruth Mary Bless Clemens and John Bless whose family owned the Chronicle for 98 years before selling the paper to the McPhersons.

Weston Historical Museum President, Clay Bauske, offered remarks honoring the couple’s dedication and lasting impact on the community, reminding attendees of the McPhersons’ important work and the value of responsible journalism.

During her remarks, Beth reflected on Weston’s history and the legacy of the newspaper, as well as her family’s personal journey in publishing. Beth expressed gratitude for the community’s support over the years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. At one point, she told the gathering simply, “We told the truth.”

Guests expressed appreciation for having a hometown newspaper — an asset many small communities no longer enjoy. Conversations underscored the vital role The Weston Chronicle has played in connecting residents with the school, the city, and one another––all while preserving the identity of the community.

Jim and Beth’s commitment to documenting community events, achievements, and traditions has created a legacy that will continue to benefit generations to come.

As host of the milestone event, the Weston Historical Museum recognizes that safeguarding Weston’s history begins with recording the accounts of what happens today.

The museum committee that planned and hosted the gathering — complete with appetizers and drinks — included Museum Director Josh Jones, along with Lona Bozzay and Cheeko Penrod, with additional help from William McQueen and others.

While retiring from the newspaper business, the McPherson family will continue to operate their Weston Garden Center, located at 18275 MO-45 Highway, the former site of the newspaper office.
