Weston Historical Museum members gather at Green home for autumn History Happy Hour

The former Lamar home on H Highway, now the residence of Missy and Blake Green, hosted the Weston Historical Museum’s autumn History Happy Hour on Oct. 17.
The twice-yearly event gives museum members a chance to socialize and learn about the history of a local home over charcuterie, wine, beer and nonalcoholic beverages. It is a free benefit of museum membership.
The Green home is an example of Carpenter Gothic architecture, a style popular for wooden houses from the 1840s through the 1880s. The best-known example appears in the background of Grant Wood’s 1930 painting “American Gothic.” The house in the painting is a real cottage in Eldon, Iowa.
Thomas Stone built the Green home in 1846 or 1847. A Stone family cemetery and large grave marker are in the backyard, within sight of the house.
Set back from H Highway with a view of the Missouri countryside, the home welcomed guests. The Greens’ two children greeted visitors and directed them to a wide side porch, where they signed in before entering the house.
After guests mingled over food and drinks, Museum President Clay Bauske welcomed the more than 50 attendees and previewed programs planned through the new year.
Missy and Blake Green shared how they came to settle in Weston and found and chose the Lamar home. They answered questions, offered a brief history of the house and described the demolition and construction work. The couple took part in every phase of the renovation, as well as the extensive landscaping.
Guests were invited to tour the home, inside and out. Dozens of enlarged before-and-after photographs showed how the Greens honored the home’s history while making it comfortable for their family.
An enlarged lithograph of the original farmstead, dating to the late 19th century, was also on display. Guests could compare it with the property’s topography today and imagine farm life in Weston during the 19th century.
Christy Shafer again chaired the event. Committee members were Diane McCaffrey, Tracy Smith, Peg Strickland and Kathi Vandel. Additional volunteers were Kate Parsons, Pete McCaffrey, Lona Bozzay, Rogers Strickland, Cliff Weiser, Clay Bauske and Judy Juergens.
Another History Happy Hour for members will be scheduled this spring. For upcoming museum events, visit westonhistoricalmuseum.org.
