Weston resident Mary Jane Norman anchored Weston Community Theatre’s production of “Nunsense” as Sister Mary Regina, the commanding Reverend Mother.
Her singing and acting remained strong through the show’s brisk choreography.
“Nunsense” follows five Little Sisters of Hoboken who stage a variety show to raise money to bury four fellow nuns whose bodies are being kept in the convent freezer.
Weston Community Theatre partnered with the Heritage Center in Leavenworth, Kan., to present the show as a dinner theater production.
Norman’s performance was especially effective when Sister Mary Regina accidentally inhaled from a bottle of “Rush.”
As the usually self-possessed Reverend Mother became giddy and disoriented, Norman flailed across the stage, punctuating her physical comedy with Hollywood film-title puns, including “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Nun” and “Nun with the Wind!”
The scene prompted a mixed reaction, with some audience members laughing loudly while others remained stoic.
The cast also used awkward pauses effectively, giving the comedy room to land.
Alexa Cary, Whitney Shockey, Monica Shores and Hayleigh Moore played Sister Mary Hubert, Sister Robert Anne, Sister Mary Amnesia and Sister Mary Leo, respectively. Joshua J. Shockey directed the production.
