Crossroads Chapel met for worship on a beautiful fall day. Although winter weather may affect attendance in the coming months, the congregation prayed for safe travel and faithful attendance each Sunday.
The adult Bible study, “The Source of Forgiveness,” focused on Psalm 103:1-13. The passage says God forgives, heals and redeems. He is faithful in love and compassion, acts with righteousness and justice, and is patient and slow to anger. Like a father, he is tender and compassionate toward those who love him.
Pastor Mark Henkel’s message, “Discovering the Season,” drew from Mark 13:5-13 and 28-29. He began the service by singing “Sheltered in the Arms of God.”
As Jesus neared his betrayal and crucifixion, he spoke to his disciples about the end times and his return. Henkel said Jesus warned them that false prophets would come in his name and told them to watch closely and remain alert.
Henkel pointed to religious leaders who claimed messianic or divine authority. David Koresh led the Branch Davidians during the 1993 siege near Waco, Texas, which ended with dozens of his followers dead. Jim Jones led Peoples Temple before more than 900 people died at Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978. Other leaders have sought recognition and power, Henkel said, but they are not the Christ who will return.
Henkel cited Mark 13:22-23, which warns that false messiahs and prophets will attempt to deceive people, and 2 Thessalonians 3:13, which encourages believers not to grow weary of doing what is right.
