Schimmel City Fishing Access to close temporarily

Schimmel City Fishing Access and its boat ramp near Farley will be closed to the public from 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, through 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, while the Missouri Department of Conservation conducts an intensive removal of invasive carp from the Platte River. The access and ramp will be closed to all use during that period.
Last year, biologists from the Missouri Department of Conservation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted an intensive removal operation in the Platte River at Schimmel City Fishing Access. They worked from the river’s confluence with the Missouri River upstream to the old cable bridge.
Crews removed more than 25,000 pounds of invasive “jumping carp” during the three-day effort. Rain canceled work on the fourth day.
The operation began a multiyear study of the effectiveness of intensive invasive-fish removal in the Platte River. Biologists will evaluate several removal methods and collect data to determine whether the work reduces the density of invasive carp. They also will gather reproductive data based on the age classes of fish caught and study how invasive carp affect native fish populations. The study also has been conducted in the Grand and Fishing rivers.
