Road district advances chip-seal work, reviews finances

The Weston Special Road District board reviewed roadwork progress, district finances and administrative matters during its Sept. 8 meeting at Weston Community Church of the Nazarene.
Board members Rogers Strickland, Billy Shenkner and Jeff Comer were present for the open session. Billy Baker arrived in time to participate in a closed session held later in the meeting. All motions passed without dissent.
District officials reported crews were continuing the 2026 chip-seal program despite running out of the granite aggregate originally used for the work. The contractor shifted to limestone for the first layer, with granite applied as the top layer.
Work was expected to continue on Countryside Road, with additional work planned on Woodruff, Spratt and Brown roads. Two low areas on Murphy Hill Road were also expected to receive wedging before chip sealing. Officials said the contractor planned to return after receiving additional materials around Oct. 8 and expected to complete the remaining work during October.
The district reported spending approximately $1.55 million of its roughly $2.37 million chip-seal budget. Officials said the program could exceed its original budget because another road was added to the project list. Overall district spending, however, remained about $1.9 million below the amount budgeted through that point in the year.
The district also requested $183,834.38 in road-tax revenue, with distribution expected in November. A workers’ compensation audit resulted in a $142 refund.
Officials reported that most district AT&T phone lines had been canceled, with the remaining line expected to be transferred before Sept. 25.
Following the open meeting, the board entered closed session to discuss personnel and legal matters. Baker joined Strickland, Shenkner and Comer for that portion of the meeting.
