In recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary, the Platte County Historical Society will host a presentation titled “The Revolutionary War Era’s Ties to Platte County History” on Oct. 18 at Platte City Middle School, 900 Pirate Drive.
The event will begin with a barbecue dinner at 1 p.m. in the school’s Forum Room. The history presentation, which will highlight Platte County’s ties to America’s founding, is expected to begin about 1:30 p.m.
Tickets cost $20 and include the dinner and history presentation. Reservations and advance payment are required by Oct. 13. Ticket information is available at pchs1882.org or in the display box on the porch of the Ben Ferrel Platte County Museum in Platte City.
During the event, the historical society will present the Betty Soper Award to Ivan Foley, former editor of The Landmark newspaper. The award is presented annually for outstanding contributions to local history.
“This presentation is unique to our region and relatable for audience members,” society President Becky Bauer said. “I think people will find it both interesting and surprising.”
Lisa Wittmeyer, manager of the Ben Ferrel Platte County Museum, wrote the script. Historical society members and friends, including Margaret Engeman of Weston, will narrate the presentation.
The program also will include a segment narrated by Diane Pepper Pickman about several Weston families with connections to Salem Christian Church.
Following the history presentation, student winners of the “America the Beautiful in Platte County, MO Essay & Art Contest” will be recognized. The contest was cosponsored by the Platte County Historical Society and Platte City Friends of the Arts, with financial assistance from the Platte Purchase Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Guests attending the dinner program also may remain for a free concert at 3 p.m. featuring music by American composers. The Platte City Community Band will perform the concert, sponsored by Platte City Friends of the Arts.
